So I still buy music like a coke fiend. I've picked up a lot in the last few months, but I'll only rattle off a couple.
Mastadon ~ Blood Mountain
Best metal of the last ten years. Period.
Blood Brothers ~ Young Machetes
Very similar to Crimes, stylistically. They're getting more refined and slowing down, but they still sound pretty batshit. **Trail of Dead and Blood Brothers at the Marquee in late Nov!!!**
Yo La Tengo ~ I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
Nothing too groundbreaking for them. Still, it's articulate and dreamy. Plus, it has the BEST ALBUM NAME EVER.
Tortoise ~ A Lazarus Taxon
Best discount box set ever. It's all their obscure stuff: b-sides, early singles, Japanese imports. I was paying top dollar to acquire most of this stuff, and now it's all available (3cds, 1dvd) for $20. Jesus Christ that's awesome.
TV on the Radio ~ Return to Cookie Mountain
Is still my favorite album of the year, easily. Although....
Sparklehorse ~ Dreamt for Light Years...
Completely caught me off guard and wormed its way into my favorites.
And I just learned today that several members of Slint have started a Priest/Maiden-inspired metal band.
Fucking awesome.
And by the way, I bought a new stack of CDs tonight. So I may post about them, like, tonight. Thanks for letting me longwind

Pretty good if you like that sort of thing. I love the last one, Separation Sunday and the new one is starting to grow on me. I had a chance to see them in Portland last week with Sean Na Na. Great show and I thought you would all appreciate this write up from the local Portland paper the Willamette Week:
The Hold Steady, Sean Na Na
Lola's Room at the Crystal Ballroom | 1332 W. Burnside St., 225-0047 [map]
[BAR ROCK] The Hold Steady is the greatest rock band currently gigging in the world. This does not necessarily mean that you will like them. Some people have problems with lead singer Craig Finn's acerbic speak-sing (à la Sam Kinison) as he tells glorious tales of middle America's crippled youth; others might have problems with Tad Kubler's propensity to insert testosterone-fueled guitar leads (à la AC/DC) into the band's four-on-the-floor joy rock (à la the E Street Band); still others might object to the fact that massive amounts of beer are spilled on the stage/floor/audience while the band turns the club into a pulsing sweatshop (à la C+C Music Factory); then there are those who do not like the Minnesota Twins and find Minnesota-native Finn's onstage boosterism (à la my buddy Mikey) obnoxious; finally, there are those who simply cannot handle the supreme coolness of keyboardist Franz Nicolay's moustache (à la Rollie Fingers). These people are commonly known as "pussies" and have no business at a Hold Steady show, especially this one where the Brooklyn band will be displaying songs from their latest masterpiece of Midwestern fiction, Boys and Girls in America. So, basically, if you are not a pussy, you must go to this show. MARK BAUMGARTEN.- Lola's Room at the Crystal Ballroom. 10:30 pm. $10 advance, $12 day of show. 21+.

i need to check out 'blood mountain', though. i can't imagine it being better than 'leviathan', but i guess there's only one way to find out.

-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.
