I lost my salaried job today, which includes my health insurance by the end of the month. I've filed my unemployment and CoveredCA/MediCal apps today and now to play the waiting game. I'll be lucky to even see two thirds of my monthly salary come in, which is a huge reduction on what I survive on paycheck to paycheck with no savings.

I know everyone is hurting, but if you have anything to spare:

It's really wild seeing this come in waves -- as of today, the US is... what... 9ish days behind Italy now? But, it feels even closer for the West Coast due to our hot spots (Seattle, SF, San Jose); whereas, I'm seeing friends in Montana anticipating a tsunami that they can't see with WAY LESS reports.

As of this past Friday, my employer was still operating as usual (though tons of Bay Area companies were already requiring mandatory WFH). Sunday rolled around so I emailed my supervisor to request permission to WFH as I'm immunocompromised due to my asthma. This morning rolls around and I still hadn't heard back; I prodded about a couple hours later and was met with "all employees that request this time away from the office are required to log it as PTO/take unpaid leave."

That quickly changed when noon hit: the State Capitol issued the strictest 'shelter in place' law requiring 6 Bay Area counties (~6.7 mil) to leave home only for the essentials until April 7, and mandated work from home unless you are in an essential career field. The CEO still managed to throw in a 'using PTO/No Pay during unproductive periods over the coming weeks will maximize our ability to stay a strong company' like lmao we're not fiscally equipped to handle this, and we expect you to make up the difference so we don't have to. Here's the kicker: I'm salary, and have enough PTO/Flex Vacation to last me until Monday. They didn't say this was mandatory, but I'm gonna fucking work every day even if that means I'm looking busy

Anyways tldr this is what Rome looked like 17 days ago: https://twitter.com/...723708411346945

Please take care of yourselves and try to isolate. It's going to get worse before it gets better.
