I have played a number of shows for Charlie over the years...are we 'friends'? No..he does not call me to have a beer, or to just shoot the shit...I don't know where he lives & have only shared one meal with him, and that was years ago....He's booked bands I've been in sight unseen...I'd like to think it's based on trust...not friendship. i try to show up on time, be professional, deliver a good set, and say please & thank you. I also only contact him, or get contacted by him, for shows that we are the most appropriate band to have play the show. I may not like all the bands that Charlie uses, but I respect his decisions, and assume he has his reasons....let's face it, there ain't much to choose from in this town. We weren't asked to play the festival, which was a bummer, but we are pretty mellow...
as far a Ticker Tape Parade goes....

'with my back to the wall, cigarette in my hand, there's plently of time to do nothing at all.

I can see it all, fall from the sky...

ashes, to trash....like a ticker tape parade..."

and, natalie....it wasn't a full GBC reunion....I got DISSED...

owie!!!

I feel awful for Chuck...and for our lame town...

this really was a testament to it....

something must be done...

was there enough advertisement for it?

maybe that was it.

the mesa amp thing. didnt need to fill it. actually, only needed it about half full for a really successful show.
in this town, you'd think that was possible.
unless you forget this.
.............lame town...........
i know we all wish it was not true, but it really is.
as far as appreciation of art/music, we barely rank above yuma.
lame.

Hello, Aaron. Sorry to hear about the show.

Another bad thing has happened to a good man.
Charlie has brought a lot to this town.

I didn't buy presale tickets, but was excited to hear about this show and was hearing about it on the zone, with mentions of the local bands and I was actually really happy to hear about this being promoted on the radio, they were giving away tickets to listeners and everything. Then lastnight or night before I heard that the show got cancelled on the radio which was a total bummer and the DJ was even talking about it being a bummer which I think is cool cause I never hear local DJ's talk about local music. As far as promotion goes I think the promotion was done amazingly well.

It's very sad it got cancelled.

I know the people who promoted this busted ass to do so. I think they did the best they could.

brodie,

a quick point re: same local bands on every charlie show.

1. check jeremiah's post reguarding the "other" bands charlie puts on shows besides his friends. in fact, check out stateside presents right now. big ups to jeremiah for making that point. the only show i've done all year for one of my best friends (charlie) was the steel train show jeremiah refered to. and we got to be on that show because of steel trains request. not because of charlie or jeremiah.

i think the "reubens gets every show" aruement is a bit played out. first off, they dont, secondly, as i stated before, reubens is on charlies label. any time he favors them is totally legit. he takes the risk on the show. he takes the risk on releasing their record. if you want to open up for death cab or whoever, promote their show and risk loosing 10-20 thousand dollars. then you can open for death cab or whoever. it might cost you $10,000, but you'll get the slot.

anyway..........in the interest of full disclosure, i will say that ian from el oso negro and chris from reubens accomplice are my roomates. charlie is one of my best friends. i dont, however, think that this waters down my arguement at all.

Ai yai yai!

Just want to say AGAIN...

1). Reuben's was used purely as a hypothetical example.

2). "Same bands, every show" doesn't apply to one booker or venue... I think MANY bands get pigeonholed with MANY venues/bookers... I was speaking to a general problem overall, not one area.

I should have started another thread to address this so y'all didn't think I was picking on anybody!

But I'm glad I played a small part in stoking discussion...

Speaking of stoked, I'm writing this from the Hotel Congress. Tucson is awesome!!! I never knew...

1) This was one of the best promoted indie shows all year. 5 weeks of huge newtimes adds. Thousands and thousands of fliers and posters everywhere a month ago. If you didnt hear about it is only because you are TRYING not to hear about stuff. If you spend 30 seconds in the last month looking for shows you would have seen it. Anyone who has shoped at Stinkweeds once in the last month saw the flier on the main counter next to the cahs register so even if you don't look at the flier rack you should have seen it.

2) $22 with no service charges at all is to much??? A. the people saying that are the people who spend $400 to go to Corchella. B. lets do math. to see the same bands over the next three months will cost you:

next time Spoon come $15 + $3 sercice charge
+ next Mates Of State $12 + $2 fee
+ next Album Leaf $7
+ next Black Heart $0 (who knows if they ever will come back they don't tour)
+ next Erliemart $10
+ next Limbeck $10

$54 bucks. And you know everyone would pay that. Why would you sooner pay $54 (and that is a conservitive estimate) than $22 to see the same bands????

3) I totaly agree with Aron. This is sad and its just cause Phoenix blows.

Moral of the story don't try and do anything cool, no one wants to see it. Lets just keep regurgitating the same crap.

Phoenix doesn't blow if you really like parking lots. Me, I don't care for them very much. But a lot of people really like them. And those red dots on the 17 are nice, they're like, hey concentrate on these, start thinking about how mundane it would be to paint these, how much it costs, how many homeless people there are, start halucintating, have car accident. I do however really like Stinkweeds and the venues on Grand Avenue. The Bikini Lounge mini pitchers of Pabst are fantastic.

Now Tucson, there's a prince of a town. Congress is a fantastic place to see a show. Minibosses: fantastic, Les Savy Fav: killed it, Black Dice: impressed me, I sat in a booth in the other room and just watched the drummer (the only one that moved, why they kicked him out, I'll never know), Numbers: god, I love that band. Wierd War: coulda used a drummer, Ian is amazing. The Makers: god that band sucked my asshole, but how drunk I got! And on and on...

brodie,
i am certain i am kicking a rotting, smelly, dead horse, but come on. i know you were using reubens as an "example", but they have had that target on their back for quite some time. maybe this should be a different topic, for sure, but if it was just an example, you might have chosen a different band to use. one that didnt get shit for it already. maybe i am being a bit too vigorous in the defense of my friends, but maybe not.

either way, there are no hard feelings. we are all in this sinking ship together. we are all awsome bands. we are all sucky bands. living the dream. yippee!!!
