Honeybees are dying

this is actually kinda scary if you think about it - they are the major pollinators of most of the earths plants - if the plants can't reproduce then the insects and animals that survive on them will die, then animals that survive on those animals and insects will die, and then ultimately we will die....

Or maybe other species of bees will become more prolific pollinators since the main competition would have died off?

let's hope darwin was right! the better bees will survive - i think it's a fungus that due to pollution, global warming, something - is able to proliferate (is that a word?) faster, easier, in places it couldn't before....

but i am no bee expert

yeah i heard about this a couple months ago. my girlfriend saw it on martha stewart? she was talking to a bee keeper and they were pulling the little trays or whatever and there were not as many bees as there used to be. i guess they are normally covered and they looked really sparse, giving all the same explanations the article you linked to gave. it was pretty sad to hear about and very frightening. i tend to just block that stuff out because it really upsets me. i just do my best not to support anything that has a negative effect on the environment. driving and plane rides are about as bad as it gets.

i'm in a mode now where i'm just living the most productive, happy, fulfilling life that i can one day at a time (or do my best to try) and make the best of it until someone or something decides to take it away from me.

yes, this world is fucked. the more i learn through school, reading and just being curious, the more i wish i didn't give a shit but that's just not me. as much as 'awareness' may bring me down, i still welcome it, so thanks jacki o.

a few years ago they said we weren't getting enough lightning, and the negative ions get the bees to breed (??? but seriously).

In our yard, at least, the population has bounced back since then. Flourish, little bees! You go, bees!

I know the wasp population is not affected. I got stung on two seperate occasions over the past 3 days. The first time the little bugger got me about five times on the part of the shoulder blade that you can't touch unless you are double jointed.

at least bees can only sting once.

What I thought was strange about the bees disappearing, is that the beekeepers say that there aren't any dead bee bodies around. So either they are all dying away from the hives, or the bees are the ones taking off to another planet...

i heard on coast to coast that there is some kind of pesticide that is being used in europe and the americas that has been proven to seriously affect the bees' natural ability to navigate their surroundings and return home, thereby leaving their hives empty. there have also been poorer agricultural returns in several places in california that have been said to been caused by this massive bee disappearance! all from weird AM radio, though...

I heard about this on NPR a week or so ago. The latest guess that had about this is that it's because of cell phones.

Yup. Cell phones.

It's hip to boycott pesticides, gas powered vehicles, and power lines, but I'd bet my left leg that Americans won't give up cell phones even if it means the eventual extinction of the human race.
