btw, i agree with you glitterbot...for a longtime i've wondered why world governments don't enact more population control policies. isn't it obvious that there are limited resources in the world? and yet only a few governments 'govern' reproductive patterns. i'm not talking about totalitarianism, but there are some rather simple incentives that can be put in place to limit population explosions.

Because poor uneducated people are having the majority of the children. If you decrease the ratio of the poor uneducated you basically have less people who just stand around and take whatever bullshit the government does or says. And of course the weathly love the poor having scores of children because that's who they make their money from (i.e., fast food, payday loans, reposessions, late payment fees, etc.). Remember, everytime you pay a fee of any kind to any financial institution you're doing your part to help the rich guys buy a new car/boat/house. Wow this turned into a rant.

You know what I think would be great? If every person was sterilized at birth, and you had to actually get it reversed when you are ready to have children. No one has kids accidentally, it has to be deliberate. No more unwanted babies, no more people whining about abortion, (but many, many more people whining about teens being able to hump without consequence).

if i was queen of the world i would make that happen. then you would have to take classes and pass parenting tests in order to actually have the reversal operation performed. imagine, a society of cared for, provided for, wanted children with parents who know what they are doing!

No more unwanted babies, no more people whining about abortion,

but an enormous spike in cases of STDs! lol

Sounds like The Giver to me... now, it's been since 4th grade that I've read it, but I think it was supposed to be bad...

But that would be the easy way out. Maybe the point of evolution is that we have to overcome these problems ourselves or we die off and mother nature starts over again. Maybe it's all for the best, really. Maybe the only answer at this point is to start over.

i highly recommend reading daniel quinn's my ishmael, as the book concerns epistemology, cultural trends on a macro scale, population and intraspecies competition, and solutions for sustainability. there are some folks out there who are fanatical about quinn, and i am not necessarily one of them, but i think he offers some insightful perspectives on what education our culture needs as far as sustainability and independent learning.

The Giver was a society that was close to perfect, but was really fucked up under the surface. What an awesome book.

i have also heard it is cell phones. matt and i were talking about this a couple of weeks ago. he said that what he heard was that it was the cell phones that disrupt their natural ability to be able to navigate, and that it is the first step on the road to starvation nation. of course, i am still all yakkity yak, texting, etc.
i swear i think we are on a doom course right now. i sometimes feel this overwhelming feeling that it is just too late to stop, that we have already completely ruined this planet and there is no going back. we can maybe slow the process, but without some sort of extinction level event, there is no reversing it. There are too many humans, and humans run roughshod over everything in their path. even the ones who THINK and TRY and CARE are still like a blight on this planet. that is one of the reasons why i never wanted children...there are already too many of us, and what is going to be here for them in 10, 20, 30 years? how about 50 years? and those of you who know me know i am not some granola hippy jerk idiot, even though this totally sounds like i am. i just find it all so goddam depressing. if it i think about everything we have done, to the earth, to animals, to other people, to the oceans, etc etc, i just want to curl up in a ball and go to sleep. sometimes i think we are due for a massive plague or something, that will decimate human population without destroying the planet. clean air, clean water, empty spaces. maybe it is coming. maybe it is the bees. jesus, now i am really depressed. thanks a lot, shizz!

btw, hey everyone, stop having kids!! or at least, stop having more than one kid.

on the slightly positive side, it's my understanding from listening to NPR that business & politicians are starting to take action (esp. in california).... it may be too little too late who knows, but the environment issues are becoming clear and undisputable even to the naysayers.

btw, i agree with you glitterbot...for a longtime i've wondered why world governments don't enact more population control policies. isn't it obvious that there are limited resources in the world? and yet only a few governments 'govern' reproductive patterns. i'm not talking about totalitarianism, but there are some rather simple incentives that can be put in place to limit population explosions.

do you know who the #1 user of Coal is for energy? China. Not pointing the finger at China alone, but think about how their population growth is going to increase their use of coal. yikes.

Speaking of China and coal, they are about to pass us as the leading country of co2 emissions... and they don't give a shit. They say that they have the right to be as industrious as they want to be and that it's not fair. Hmmm.

Maybe we could all move here

our astronauts need to be out there discovering places for us to move to after we can no longer live on earth! they need to be out in space, no shitting in diapers and driving arcoss the US to kidnapp people.

in all seriousness - everything on this earth is dependent on each other and if you fuck up one thing, everything else gets fucked up too. its true that things evolve and survival of the fittest is a necessity but when you make survival impossible then there is not change or evolution or progress.

however nature does have a way of regulating things. maybe some big plague will come and wipe out almost all the humans? and we'll have to start over again...but this time we'll be smarter and know about the importance of the environment and computers and shit.....

this was on the colbert report 2 nights ago.

Colbert On new Earth: “Turns out Earth is just a starter planet. We can trash it all we want.” That works out for me — I did not want to wash those dirty dishes I hid under my bed!

the poor uneducated people are having tons of kids because they have no access to contraceptives - their countries have outlawed it - if you have no access to birth control or condoms then guess what happens if you have sex?

AND the US contributes to this by not giving monetary aid to poorer countries if they allow abortions, contraceptives, and reproductive health and education access to their citizens. we suck.

Because linking to the onion is too easy...

Scientists have discovered an Earth-like planet orbiting a red dwarf star 20 light-years away. What do you think?

"How Earth-like? 'Temperate and able to sustain life' Earth-like or 'completely overrun with self-absorbed assholes' Earth-like?"

Secondly, Health from the Hive has lots of stuff made by "harnessing the hidden power of the Honey Bee". They donate some of their profits to save the bees. And they urge you to "give bees a chance"... I don't write the shit, I just hear it a dozen times a day because they advertise during Howard Stern (so I know how to save the bees, and view internet pornography anonymously all from one commercial break).

As for us on this planet, I'm holding out for the army of the 12 monkeys. One way or another, we're getting flushed out. It's just a race between mother nature and our own unwavering dedication to self-destruction. We had a good run.

No reason to be down though, we've still got beer. Just enjoy the ride.

If i read another complaint about Chinese pollution i'm going to fucking barf. Christ, Its so fucking easy for us in North America to blame everyone else! I mean, we have a fraction of the population, and more co2 emissions! WTF?

Whats the best thing you can do for the environment?
