Simply the act of planning it and committing terrorist acts are enough to warrant having him put away in jail.

hunter, you are ignoring that Kurt's "absence of friendship and kindness" was:
a ) temporary
b ) a result of having his dreams destroyed

i don't think anyone is saying "oh, well, he shouldn't go to jail or be punished!" rather, people are saying "it's out of character for him, and was obviously a result of this one instance. we would rather see him helped than spend 5 years stewing in resentment in a jail cell."

luckily for you, hunter, i don't think anyone's going to let friendship and kindness get in the way if you do something like this.

p.s. all people deserve kindness. two wrongs don't make one right. etc.

Nothing excuses what he did, and what he planned to do. And no, not all people deserve kindness. You're pretty idealist and ignorant if you think so. The guy who rapes a little girl deserves kindness? I wish I could be so forgiving, as you seem to be.

Sure, he deserves the kindness of not assuming he's just a born evil person, and deserves the kindness of learning what makes him tick, and he deserves the kindness of a punishment that will best fit him.

Kindness and blind acceptance / ignorance / apathy are not the same things.

He didn't rape anyone, so making the correlation between him and a rapist is extreme.

He did think about it, and he did write a manifesto discussing it.
Nobody is condoning his actions, but we need to understand what he did and did not do.

He did not kill anyone
He did not hurt anyone
He thought about killing people
He wrote in detail about killing people
He turned himself in.

I think he deserves punishment, but not 5 years.

Hunter it sounds like maybe you had an incident when you were younger where maybe you were not shown the kindness and forgivness you deserved.

would you like to talk about it?

What he was planning to do was unforgivable, and the length to which he went is unforgivable. That's all I'm saying. It's not a case where it's just:

"Oh, he was just pissed cuz of his business license and it's being denied."
"Aw, he just had a bad day man, he wouldn't have done it, for real."
"Well, at least he didn't go through with it."

At what point do you call a spade a spade and just say how fucked up what he was planning to do was? I mean, it's like you guys are giving him kudos for not actually going through with it. The fact he even went as far as he did in the first place is the thing I have a problem with. It's lucky that he didn't go through with it -- but the lengths in which he went through to get as far as he did are more than enough to put him in prison for a few years.

"Yeah dude, it's fucked up but at least he didn't kill anyone. Let's go drink some pabst blue ribbon."

Lame. :(

Last time I checked, actually killing a bunch of people is immeasurably worse than planning to kill people but backing out at the end.

Are you incapable of seeing that the fact that he made a conscious decision to back out and turn himself in is an indicator that he realized he was wrong?

I'm bored and have an hour until I go home, so keep it coming.

I don't necessarily disagree with the verdict, or even the sentence.
I'm not sure I can even wrap my mind around what the appropriate sentence would be.

I know that he needs help, and while I am not normally one for prayer, I pray that he gets the help he needs.
In my tiny bit of experience with the correctional system, I saw very little rehabilitation of any kind going on.

I am fucking down for hugs though.
Anyone that wants one, anytime, just ask me.

I could use a few hugs myself right now.
