My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

and why in the first season did the others only take certain people from the survivors, mainly children,
and why were they being walked through the zoo where jack and sawyer where in the bear cages?

The meaning of the numbers was explained in the episode Lighthouse when Jack learned that if the Lighthouse mirror were turned to a certain degree, it would show the lives of a particular person. The people who were shown at 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 were the remaining candidates to replace Jacob, explaining why the names were grouped together with those numbers in Jacob's cave. (The only exception to this is Kate, whose corresponding number 51 is not one of the original sequence.) Jacob had instructed Hurley to turn the mirror to 108 degrees (4+8+15+16+23+42) so that the people who were coming could see, but he was unable to do this as Jack smashed the mirror

ok so how did hurly pick the numbers? just random?, so the dharma folks figured out this set of numbers via some math equation to predict the result of the cold war, ie, to stop it or the result of destroying the human race, then the others got them some how and focused on the people whos names related to the numbers? and yea i really didn't pick up on that last week. i am a art teacher and numbers are really not my area of expertise neither is spelling

It has been revealed in The Lost Experience that these six numbers are the core values of the Valenzetti Equation, a mathematical formula designed to predict the end of humanity. The numbers in actuality are said to represent human and environmental factors in the equation (given numerical form), though their precise meaning is uncertain. One purpose of the DHARMA Initiative was to change the factors leading to humanity's demise, which will be indicated by an alteration in at least one of the human/environmental factors - i.e. the numbers. However, in all its years of research, the Initiative failed to reach its goal. Despite much research and manipulation of the equation's values, the end result was always the numbers.
In an interview with E! in 2009, Damon stated the following in regards to the Numbers: "Here's the story with numbers. The Hanso Foundation that started the Dharma Initiative hired this guy Valenzetti to basically work on this equation to determine what was the probability of the world ending in the wake of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Valenzetti basically deduced that it was 100 percent within the next 27 years, so the Hanso Foundation started the Dharma Initiative in an effort to try to change the variables in the equation so that mankind wouldn't wipe it itself out." I'd be careful about reading too much stuff online if you've only watched the show and not participated in any of TLE (the lost experience) shenanigans. It makes you go, "wait, I don't remember when that happened" and it'll mess you up even more.
