the only friend I know that has a truck is out of town for awhile. I am kind of hoping that if I jump the battery it will hold a charge long enough to drive it to the shop a mile away. hope hope hope. Asking mechanics here at work if it will work.

I've been trying to peek into the General Forum here more often, but I keep forgetting. It's especially bad because sometimes I even post here and expect a reply...and then forget entirely.

when i was in college one of my roommates (we nicknamed him "the ninja", but that's a whole other story) wrecked his piece of shit truck and the front end got all smashed in. he told us it wasn't his fault and the other driver was an illegal alien and drove away, but we were all pretty convinced that wasn't the case. anyway, rather than pay for the repairs he thought we could help him fix his truck. we're talking about one of those mid 80's datsun miniature trucks, by the way, the ones that were about the same size as a honda civic. the insurance company (it unclear whether he had insurance or not) probably would have totaled his car and written him a check for like $200, but he was hellbent on fixing it. so he comes in with a length of chain from somewhere and asks me how "powerful" my car is. i ask him what he's got in mind, and he wants to attach a chain to my rear axel, and then attach the other end to his bumper, and then have me pull his car back into shape - like it's going to "un-wrinkle" it, for lack of a better term. i say no way, partly because i'm convinced this is a bad idea, and partly because he was a turd. he insists that this is how they fix cars in regular body shops. i'm not a mechanic, in fact, i'm perhaps the least mechanically inclined person i know, but i'm pretty sure they don't use cars to pull other cars back into shape.

so my other roommate (the one i actually like) says sure, he'll use his car to do it. more than anything, he's just curious to see what's going to happen. they attach the chain and he starts pulling - nothing happens. so rob guns it a little more and his tires start spinning and smoking, but nothing happens to the truck. this goes on for like 5 minutes, then finally he actually starts pulling the truck. it doesn't come back to the right shape, mind you, he's just dragging it across the parking garage. the ninja finally gives up and announces to rob that his car sucks for not being able to do the job.

Well I'm on day two of a rental (I didn't rent one over the weekend) and it cost me $65 to tow the car to the shop. The shop said it's going to be about $408 to replace my alternator (and power steering belt and a/c belt - didn't even know they had belts hahaha)... I hope they get it done today. I miss my car. And I hate spending money like this.
