Did you commit a crime? Why so defensive?
Jan 7 1980 Desert Samaritan Hospital, Mesa AZ
Is that good enough?
i don't understand this at all. am i supposed to look that up online? is it supposed to have some personal meaning? Are you really THAT terrified of any kind of dissent?
Is yours "the best doggone music "scene" in the world? Magical.
no, ours isn't the best in the world. no, i'm not afraid of dissent. simply stating that i disagree with you, and providing some examples of why. it seems like you want to say "you guys suck" and get people riled up, and then really offer nothing constructive after that. mission accomplished. i don't even know why i'm letting you get under my skin. maybe it's because i'm particularly sensitive today.
i'm also curious about your writing, because you've noted several times that you're a writer as if that lends more credibility to your argument. i haven't seen anything from you that would back that up.
Ha!
First off, me being a writer gives me LESS credibility if anything, the way I see it. It gives me no added pull, or credibility in my mind anyway.
I am simply a music fan.
I love Phoenix, it's my hometown. What I don't love is people who are so insecure, they think the comments I make are an attack on their city and thus their identity.

it seems to me there are two very important things to remember here:
ONE-if you have a good sense for public relations and have an out going and friendly constitution people will come see your band. it simply does not matter whether or not your bands suck. ive been practicing smiling while gazing into the mirror. ive also been brushing my teeth more often and more efficiently. oh yes, and the use of deodorant, yes, more often with the deodorant. i would like nothing more than when people think of me, for them to have only thoughts of puppy dogs and sunshine. i want in on this new group of people on the shizz. i want them to like me. ive alienated myself and have had a poor attitude.
TWO- hepatitis C is rampid in phoenix.
on a side note, i wont be going to any of those shows tonite. ill be having friends over(i do have some of those left) and considering the fact and or possibility that i just might be the master of my own universe.
how many people here google themselves and or band on a daily basis? all you folks are duper!
Hey R OF PENSACOLA: (ONE) I'm not in a band. BUT I willl Keep practicing smiling. We should all prsctice in front of the mirror. Appearances are omportant. Keep it up and keep those pearly whites shining. Kudos. Sleep we;;.
I am not R OF PENSACOLA, but (ONE) I willl keep prscticeing in front of the mirror. You are right, appearances are incredibly omportant. It may be tough for me, but I will do my best to sleep we;; tonight, knowing that I live in a music scene that is so critical.
Douchebag. Everything's fine. Sorry if you have a problem with it.
There's no sort of alarm going off when many are content and you are not?
Jesus. Self absorbed much?
And if you're a writer, then god help us all.

If everything's fine, why so angry, tiger?
I'm generally content, and again, Phoenix is my hometown. I just have this "silly" idea that perhaps things could be improved in Phoenix. (I write about, and advocate support for local music in LA as well, which has it's own problems).
NO ONE on this board has acknowledged ANY problems. Denial must be bliss. I'm trying to help, I'm just sorry defense of your ego trumps honest debate, Shizz Master...
JC of Bethlehem? I shouldn't even have to explain myself...
Perhaps this is news to you, but many writers/bloggers publish their work under pseudonyms (ie. Serene Dominic, a great local Phoenix writer). I've written under the pseudonym John Christianson, initially when I was working for a newspaper in BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania. Hence, JC of Bethlehem.
I didn't become a writer to make friends.
So God help us all, indeed.

this is the most trite and unproductive thread ever.
Historically speaking, if people don't complain, how does anything improve? Ever?
historically speaking, people complain then do something about it. not just continue to flog a dead horse topic.
dear H.F, thanks for your thoughts, phoenix will get right on it, and next time you visit, hopefully you will see some improvement.
thanks
chad
You can try to marginalize me all you like.
I am not the enemy. Apathy is. And frankly I'd rather be unpopular, and perhaps make people think a bit, and want to improve their city, than sit idly by as my hometown of Phoenix continues to be ostracized in the national music media and among those in the booking/management industries. The purpose of my posts are a call to action. Perhaps you disagree with my methods, they are admittedly confrontational. But pats on the back rarely facilitate real change.

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

still waiting for a link to your writing. any link.
Um, OK.
Am I applying for a job?
I've written for Lehigh Valley News (Bethlehem, PA), Milk, Sweet Tooth Zine, and a few other zines, do you remember? Back when paper zines existed/were flourishing) and until recently for IE (Inland Empire) Weekly doing the events calendar and album reviews. I do mainly freelance lately.
My oft-neglected blog is here. My wife and I have a 2 year old so I haven't been keeping up with the blog too much.
here
People have been bugging me about it, so I actually have a new post up.
If you want to find more, look me up. I don't feel it's my job to try to impress you, or legitimize my opinions. It's actually comical.
Pseudonyms; Herb Ferguson, John Christianson, Dirty Bird, Herbavore, etc, there's more.

How about an outdoor show at a park (for donations)? I can talk to a few LA bands about coming out to Phoenix, maybe (realistically) January. The weather is superb in AZ in January (compared to anywhere else).
We could have 10+ local Phoenix bands, playing all day, beginning at 11 or 12. The only cost would be park permits (which would take time) and a generator (and some cash for the bands). I think ideas like this should be explored more. An all ages show in a relaxed setting? This is the type of thing every city needs, and we could get a nice turnout.
I'll handle the LA bands, but if anyone's interested in handling them on the Phoenix end, let me know.

phoenix does need more all ages festivals where we get like 10+ local bands to participate. i wish somebody would organize something like that.

You might have an account on here since 2005 but you clearly don't know this board very well. You originally posted it in the shows and stuff forum.
You have only made negative comments of not only Phoenix, but L.A. so I guess you are not happy anywhere that you are at. You seem to be a very unhappy person who is trying to bring other people with you in your misery. The people here are getting defensive because many of us on this board have put so much into this "joke" of a scene. The majority of the people reacting to you are people who invested much time performing, working the doors, running sound, organizing events, and most importantly attending many events here in this city.
Attacking this scene without any real presence previously on this board is asking for the kind of reaction that you are getting. You have not offered any constructive ways to improve, you only state that it is a joke, and that say we are putzes for reacting the way we are.
This is clearly a troll thread, but I know you would feel justified if I closed this thread, so I will give you a warning.
Be constructive, if you see a problem, give an idea on how to improve it instead of saying it's a joke, because that does nothing for anyone.
If you have nothing to add to this scene, you have no reason to be on this board, and I will ban you.
If you have any questions, please feel free to pm me.
Good luck

The first three posts on the this thread were made by you. The second is you quoting yourself, apparantly bumping the thread because you didn't get an initial reaction. You made some remarks that would make people get defensive. Now you are wondering why people are getting defensive.

Oh, Donald...
I'm quite happy. But is it so wrong to be unsatisfied, and want things to be better? No place is perfect. No place ever will be. But the fact that people got defensive means they are passionate, and thus we're on the right path to improving things; creating a unique, thriving music scene in Phoenix. And for clarification's sake, I never called Phoenix's music scene a joke, I've only heard other writers/bands/promoters refer to it as such.
Ban me? My apologies for not knowing your board well enough. So if I disagree/cause dissent or conflict I'll be banned? How democratic.
I'm offering a solution, a day festival, with hopefully more to come. Keep in mind we don't need venues (or even houses) to hold shows.
I'm even willing to take care of the noise park permits. It could even be presented by the Shizz. And you insult me for trying to help? I'm sorry my methods are somewhat confrontational, but you can't attack me for trying to help.

Let's do it! I'm sorry if I come off like an asshole, I'm told that quite a bit.
I think it would be great, we should pick a park (and date) in PHX or Tempe (they are more lax with noise). I'll look into the permits,
