At the time, it was almost as if you went to see either of these bands to listen to them banter with or berate the audience. Le Shok had a pretty good set but sonically, the sound was crap and the singer, Hot Rod Todd kept razzing the sound guy like, "C'mon man, I shared my cocaine with you. Let's make this happen," or "This is probably good for Napalm Death but we can't play this way. As if I know anything about speed metal." Something like that. I was fucking funny though.
dude that shit was weak, i mean hey hotrodtod do you think giving the some coke to the sound guy will make you sound better? he was all what the f man i bro'ed out with you and everything to the sound guy through the audience. this shit was supposed to be punk not scottsdale.
i didn't like that. but i have a hard time liking san diego spock rock attitudes
-trunkspaceAll the time when I tell people what I do they say, "Oh I don't understand art, I can't even draw." (or worse, "I only like art I can understand.") Well, ya know what, I don't know how to make a car, but I sure appreciate being able to drive one.

Yeah, that's right. He was like "I bro'd down with you and everything.." and all that (or something like that). I thought he was funny.

And Jacki's right, a good show is always worth it.
And I like shitholes.
And not those kind.
But probably that too.

It seems like a lot of us are thinking we won't go into that shithole anymore and we won't drive to Mesa anymore and so on and so forth. Isn't that how it is sort of supposed to be now? That place represented a haven for young kids to go see shows and probably hear things or do things their parents wouldn't have liked had they known. It kinda raised a lot of us musically. Maybe now that can be that place for someone else. Yeah, we are too old to get up and down those stairs and yeah we are too old to cook in the summer down there. Maybe we aren't the ones who it's for anymore.
Although I'm 35 (36 this year), I haven't grown out of getting my ass to shows at places like this. I do, however, like the above rationale. It doesn't always have to be 'me, me, me...'. This could be a place that gives a newer, younger generation a place to go to see bands they might not be able to see otherwise. On top of that, is there another venue in Mesa?

The funny thing is I'll probably end up at that place more in my 30s than I ever did in my 20s. Truly didn't go there for so many years due to not wanting a dime to end up in Corey Adam' pockets. Did play a bunch of shows there early on, when there was still and upstairs...anyone remember that?
Safehouse played with Hoover and Franklin in the UP upstairs before Corey lived up there. That shit was tight. Two black guys in two punk bands. That shit didn't happen often enough. Unless Born to Ignorance was playing with us, of course...
I banged a girl on Coreys FAVORITE couch up in his office when he was in jail (one of the many times he as in jail for beating someone unconscious) That guy was THE shadiest you'll ever meet. Glad he's gone...
The naked Propaghandi show sticks out in my memory, too. I was sitting on stage about three feet behind the singers' naked, sweaty balls for that one. Tits on stage courtesy of my guitar players girlfriend. Played with Shades Apart there, too, to about 15 people.
Eric, Don't forget about the Jake benefit show with Hupscratch, Safehouse, Horace Pinker, Carrier?, Jimmy Eat World (who got signed to Capital that night) and shit...Driver? Or were they Seven Story yet?

this is more true than i want to admit...i will still be at this new spot, but i think its very possible you are hitting the nail on the head moreso than anyone else yet.

face it, you're all the old guy/girl now!
Indeed. I've come to terms with not giving a shit how old I am. I turn 35 this year and am still playing house shows in a hardcore band. At this point I think I'll keep it up until my body gives out on me.

I remember that Franklin show. That band was so good for a while. I remember John and I going, "well, you know there's a band on tour, there'd never be two black guys at a punk show". Lame but true.
While I would love to think we played that show, I'm not sure we did. I think they were Seven Story by then...Driver was better...Soulside covers!

Before they raised the roof in the main room wasn't there super low ceiling fans? or are my memories blurring together.
Are they going to blast techno in the main room when there are shows in the "underground"? For old times sake?

i've wondered the same thing before. i'd think it was unlikely as they wouldn't have lasted long. for some reason phx folks can't help but throw shit into spinning fans. or the faces of musicians on stage. ha.

I wonder how many shows link 80 played at the nile. The time I saw them there wasn't in an upstairs room it was in the basement right after their singer had died and they put out that album with the new singer. Shit was so tight.
