Brewer appealed for unity while addressing a joint session of the state Legislature on Monday for her annual State of the State address.
Arizonans hoping to hear some of Brewer's plan for the state's future will have to wait, as she tossed out her originally planned speech on economic development, education and taxes.
"I will deliver that plan to you, but not now. Not today," she said.
Brewer says the first response to the tragedy must be led by prayer and comfort for the victims and their families.
She says Arizona is in pain and its grief is profound but "we will never be brought down."
Brewer recounted some of what happened at the shooting scene, including efforts to help victims. She introduced Daniel Hernandez, a University of Arizona student and Gifford intern who aided Giffords. Hernandez received a standing ovation during Monday's proceedings.

At least the families of the victims won't actually have to SEE the Phelps.

I'm pulling for E, cuz after all, I am a crazy fucking Arizonan.
Westboro Baptist Church is going to be at the funerals, my friends and I are thinking about protesting them
someone should make a protest sign that is 10ft tall and 40ft wide and stand between the wbc protesters and the funerals.
Let's make this happen.
Birthday wish fulfillment.
It's sad that when a terrible act such as this is punctuated by right wing christianity posturing.
Give it up already!
don't they know people in this state are fucking crazy?
if wbc protests, i predict one of the following:
a - somebody from wbc gets shot
b - somebody protesting the wbc protests gets shot
c - the pima county sheriff gets fired because he ignores the wbc's constitutional right to act like shitheads and decides to detain them to preserve the dignity of the funeral (i wouldn't put it past him, and he'd be a national hero if he did it)
d - both a and b
e - all of the above
come on, C!
Just as long as they don't shoot the guy holding the sign saying
Odin is God (Read The Mighty Thor #5)

I would advocate handling them in the manner that the San Diego ComiCon did, when they decided to protest last year.
tyler,
as juvenile as it sounds, i'd say hit a joke shop before heading down to tucson and stock up on stink bombs. it's not going to drive anyone away probably but they certainly stink enough to cause a distraction and make life unpleasant for a few mins. maybe some of that "canned fart" spray or something. you're not assaulting anyone physically so you shouldn't get in trouble at all.

If someone would really do this, i'd be willing to part with my bottle of "Liquid Ass" (youtube it)
It's the kind of stink that doesn't go away and INSTANTLY offends.

can you spray it in the air and it lingers? or do you have to spray it at or on someone? my concern would be that if you have to get something on someone, it can be called assault. or.. if someone was so daring.. they could spray themselves and just stand among the protesters. ha

Upon hearing that WBC intended to picket the funeral of shooting victim, 9-year-old Christina Green, several Facebook pages sprung up calling for action. The largest, "Show Support for the Families of the Tucson Shooting Victims", lists over 5,000 individuals planning to attend Thursday's counter-action as of this submission, a number that has increased steadily since the page's creation. Several others have verbally expressed their intentions to attend, with some groups planning to come from Phoenix and nearby states. According to an event organizer, at least one family has declared their intention to fly in from out of the country.
A planning meeting was held at Tucson's downtown library on Monday evening. Organizers passed out an agenda stating, "We will not let Fred Phelps or WBC protest any funeral in Tucson. We are NOT a counter-protest to WBC. We are a group of citizens who desire to provide a safe sanctuary where the family and their friends can attend the funerals in peace, held with dignity, and surrounded in love."
Those planning to attend Thursday's human blockade were encouraged to avoid the use of signs, music, talking, fundraising, and distributing of literature. It was emphasized that no person should interact with the WBC protestors. Organizers claimed that a group of trained "angels" would be on hand to protect the grieving family from viewing WBC's startling signs.
One speaker described previous experience counteracting WBC protests and mentioned that the group has yet to follow it's typical procedures for arranging a protest: registering for a permit with the local sheriff's department and listing the event on the group's online protest calendar. Because of this, it was suggested that the group may have decided not to demonstrate at the funeral.
Regardless of WBC's intention to picket young Christina Green's funeral, it appears that hundreds and perhaps even thousands of local and visiting citizens plan to line the procession route in a silent human blockade, displaying support for the family and providing protection from potential provocateurs.
