it'd be a shame if you were covered in stink, and there was no protest afterall.

Individuals and organizations called for the Tucson community to come together in a peaceful resistance to proposed funeral protests by the marginal Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), known historically for protesting the funerals of gays and AIDS victims but branching out in recent years to target high profile funerals, including those of the military.

Upon hearing that WBC intended to picket the funeral of shooting victim, 9-year-old Christina Green, several Facebook pages sprung up calling for action. The largest, "Show Support for the Families of the Tucson Shooting Victims", lists over 5,000 individuals planning to attend Thursday's counter-action as of this submission, a number that has increased steadily since the page's creation. Several others have verbally expressed their intentions to attend, with some groups planning to come from Phoenix and nearby states. According to an event organizer, at least one family has declared their intention to fly in from out of the country.

A planning meeting was held at Tucson's downtown library on Monday evening. Organizers passed out an agenda stating, "We will not let Fred Phelps or WBC protest any funeral in Tucson. We are NOT a counter-protest to WBC. We are a group of citizens who desire to provide a safe sanctuary where the family and their friends can attend the funerals in peace, held with dignity, and surrounded in love."

Those planning to attend Thursday's human blockade were encouraged to avoid the use of signs, music, talking, fundraising, and distributing of literature. It was emphasized that no person should interact with the WBC protestors. Organizers claimed that a group of trained "angels" would be on hand to protect the grieving family from viewing WBC's startling signs.

One speaker described previous experience counteracting WBC protests and mentioned that the group has yet to follow it's typical procedures for arranging a protest: registering for a permit with the local sheriff's department and listing the event on the group's online protest calendar. Because of this, it was suggested that the group may have decided not to demonstrate at the funeral.

Regardless of WBC's intention to picket young Christina Green's funeral, it appears that hundreds and perhaps even thousands of local and visiting citizens plan to line the procession route in a silent human blockade, displaying support for the family and providing protection from potential provocateurs.

they believe the deaths of these people (9 year old girls, soldiers in afghanistan, etc.) are god's punishment for our tolerance of homosexuality. ironically, they would be happier if we governed ourselves more like iran. but i digress.

My thesis is called the "Black-Emperor-Says Theory" and holds that any any Phoenix-area indie rock festival there is a 100 percent probability that Emperors of Japan, Black Carl, and/or What Laura Says will be on the bill.

they are protesting her FUNERAL because her family belongs to the roman catholic church and they believe god hates everyone but them.

they are stupid. just one family that is a "church" that goes around protesting funerals and other private events in order to get publicity, they want law enforcement to stop them from protesting so they can sue for violation of 1st amendment rights and win money in court. 3 of the sons in the family are lawyers.

they are just douches who want attention.

Thanks Tony and Jackie... now I understand a little more about this group... or don't? It really makes me sad.. in the most EMOest way possible, how some "human beings" beheave... or the ideals that driven them to hurt other people.. its fucking crazy.

I wonder how the world would be if everyone, and I mean every single person took the day off from everything except doing something they love doing... That did not involve hurting, killing, damaging someone else or themselves... in my head I picture a terrorist trying to solve a 5,000-piece puzzle or something...

The apparent secret "gimmic" behind the WBC is that they hope to provoke people into attacking them physically, and thus fund themselves thru lawsuit money. EEEeeeeevil f*ckers.

i was going to google and post a picture of a sniper rifle and mention that this method would make this a lot easier but i'm at work and that's likely not a great idea right now. so use your imagination. ;)
