opponents of the light rail claim that only 4% of the population will be benefited by the new system. what's so infuriating about this is that the majority of this 4% are the people that can't afford cars and/or insurance to drive around the freeways! this segment of the population is doing us the real service by keeping our air clean and streets safer, yet we should disregard them because they only represent 4%. these people need to be represented, too.

yeah?!?

and they don't get raped by skyrocketing fuel prices or rising car insurance rates, and they don't have to pay for their stupid tabs either.

I have no sympathy for these people. They are as "poor" as I am . The only difference is that I have a car. (which I don't even own yet)

umm, that's a pretty big difference. and given
the choice, i think a lot of them would opt to have
a car if they could. especially in phoenix.

well gee.

let's see. where I live, there aren't any decent paying jobs that I can walk to. If there were any available, I would be happy to walk. IN FACT, I pretty much use my car solely to commute to work. It's not like I like driving.

don't drive?

it's that simple? Either you don't own a car, or you don't work. Or you are 15. which one is it?

that's my point! most of the people that ride the bus do it because they have to! and why shouldn't we try to improve the public transit system for these people?

i genuinely believe that if most of us made more of an effort to A) ride the bus B) buy fuel efficient cars C) carpool D) walk to work

we could make a helluva improvement and this conversation would be unnecessary. unfortunately most of us are just too lazy or uninvolved.

fine. Improve it then, but how are you going to improve it so that people like me can use it? my commute to work is 28 miles. I need to make this commute in less than 45 minutes. It also has to cost less than 2.00$ per trip, AND it can't be supported by people who won't use it (i.e. taxing the shit out of vehicle tags)

what's your solution?

too uninvolved?

what can I do to NOT pay 160$ in taxes for something I will never benefit from? Sign me up!

you have to drive. but working 28 miles away from
home and having to make the drive in less than 45 minutes
are choices. those things are changeable. so if you're going
to keep them like that, i wouldn't complain about all the
taxes/costs that come with owning a car. especially when
there are people out there less fortunate than you that
don't even have a car, or, worse, a job.

But these issues get more complicated the more variables you throw in. I would love to live so close to work that I could walk, and I could make the choice to do that, but how does that affect Christine's commute? It would add 20 minutes at least and a lot of frustrating traffic to her drive time. So, I guess my point is, not much, other than the fact that our very way of life has become dependent on automobiles and alternatives will always only benefit few people without completely restructuring our way of life.

Also, how do you transport a 4x12 speaker cabinet to a gig on a bus or subway? You can't, so you get a smaller amp and sacrifice your tone for transportation. I won't sacrifice my tone for anything. :)

because that changes everything. i will
not pay any more taxes for my beautiful TONE!!!

In a recent study of commute times in traffic in the majority of urban areas in the country found that traffic and commute times have risen everywhere in the country--except for Seattle/Tacoma--it has stayed the same there for the past ten years.

You can avoid paying taxes by getting involved in your city, county, state, and federal government. Your vote is your voice. You can be an advocate for your views and join groups that have lobbyists that promote your views to elected officials.

Yeah, I should try to get on the light rail board, and make sure they design secure 4x12 carriers onto the trains for gigging musicians.

EDIT: Sorry, I'm not trying to mock you, I just thoguht that would be a cool idea.

hey! I COULD take the bus out here. that transit time is 1 hour 15 minutes. these people that don't have jobs, heh. They can take a bus way out here also. what makes them any different than me?

I would take a bus if I didn't have a car. I would also be hella rich at that point. sprawl and these crazy fuel prices are designed to keep hard working americans poor! how do I not have any room to bitch?

why do we drive? because TIME is a precious commodity.
