yeah, nice to have matched up faces w/ names, d. I was quite impressed with the turnout last night, I hope something comes of it. quite an interesting cross-section of musicians, and good to see a few promoter-booker types there as well. maybe more focused on the mill ave/ tempe circuit than I hoped, but I think most of those folks aren't so narrow as to limit their efforts to that neighborhood. keep me posted on the zine brainstorms as it sifts out, looking for to helping... -j

The only problem with making live shows the "cool thing to do" is that eventually it stops being "cool." Then you're basically back to square one. I think you either enjoy seeing good music or you don't really care about what shows are going on. It's pretty cut and dry.

The music scene from what I have noticed is very cyclical

Venues will change from live music to a dance club and vice
versa depending on the trend. Gibsons turned into a dance club
and is now turning back into a music venue, so is the old balboa
cafe. I am sure it won't stay that way forever. There are alot of
bands that trudge along and get frustrated about the scene, I am
definintely one of them. But I am not gonna let that stop me
from telling people how cool it is to see AAA live or Rum Tenor
or any other band, and if they don't think it's cool, so be it, at least
I tried and I didn't lose anything by doing it.

It was definitely more of a networking type of evening. Around 30-40 people showed up. It was put together by Josh who runs Ziggy's. They are shifting their focus away from sports and more towards live music. By the end of the month they plan to be doing live music 7 nights a week. They want to make Mill Ave a viable place for live music again. They want to start doing shows outside at Hayden Square again. Though Long Wong's and Bash are closing/changing venue styles, there is also another live music venue opening right there in Hayden Square.

Walt (Richardson??) from the band Morning Star was helping out. He's been playing professionally here for a very long time. He offered to help out anyone who needed it with info; i.e. music lawyers, setting up shows, copyrights, etc.

Jake the booking guy from the Clubhouse was there and handing out cards. Said give him a call if anyone wanted to set up a show.

Kimber(??) from Modified was there talking to people. Said she wants to do all kinds of different things, music, art, comdiens, etc. She prefers actual demo CDs to email requests to download stuff. And really talked up a place called Fat Cat's right around the corner from Modified. Don't know the venue type, though.

Got to meet members from Rum Tenor and The Dames. And the promotors from Third Eye who are putting on the last show on New Year's Eve at the Cajun House. There was one other female promoter who has been doing some national booking. But I didn't catch her name.

Found out that apparently The Stray Cat is shifting their focus from sports to live music as well, since their best nights have been when bands played.

Didn't get to meet any other Shizzsters, but it was still an eventful night. I checked Saturday w/ the bartender if there were going to be any more "meetings." She said not that she knew of. But I also sent an email to Ziggy's site just to double check. No word yet.

We started playing about 15 minutes after their set was over. Do you know how many of the 60-80 people stuck around to see us? ZERO. Not a single motherfvcking one of them.

How the HELL is a "scene" supposed to stick together or get more people out to shows when people only go to see the one band they know about on the bill, and leave afterwards?

Oh Christ, I know!!!!! What the hell, people, show up for the opening bands and watch them!!! You could walk out of there with a new favorite band. It's happened to me TWICE!!

That's a good summary Nil

It was actually Leslie from modified that was there not Kimber, there were other shizzsters there too
besides Rum Tenor, Daughters of Fission, Ex HotFoughtCold members, I met Skeksis from the board
there too. It was a good networking event for sure and would like to see ziggy's do another one like it.

I will work on that, I am going to be revamping the site here pretty soon so I will definitely see how I can implement that.

Hi gang, I wanted to make myself available on this loop and say thank you to all who attended the December 16th meeting. For those of you who don't know me yet, I am the guy who put together the shin-dig. Let me start by saying how much I appreciate this...the dialogue. It is what has been lacking, whether we agree, disagree, or whatever, the fact that we are talking local music only benefits the scene. I read every post on this thread and I've got to say they are all great points and valid. Let me add that this was simply a first step, measuring the level of interest in working together, musicians and clubs, and the desire to meet mutual achievements. I'm fairly new to working within the live music scene and I kept hearing from other club oriented people just how lazy musicians were, or how they didn't want to work to get people to shows, etc., and on the other side of the coin, how clubs were just out to screw the musicians or they would make promises and pull the rug out from under you. So I thought both comments were bullshit and I wanted to see if we could get those really interested in working together. I knew we were out there. At the same time, I was pleasantly surprised at how many people were able to attend, because of the holidays, and all the other stuff that dominates our lives. So here we are at the beginning of what can be something very cool. The first meeting was a meet and greet, learn who the players are, and the second meeting I hope to get more in depth. What do clubs expect? What do musicians expect, perhaps even a Q&A format. We'll, see I am still putting that together. I would also like to add that I think key to the growth of the scene is a dedicated mag with articles on bands, something similar to Skratch, or whatever. I spoke to Chad about that and I would be willing to help however possible. We need to establish a little mystique and history to create a good scene, get people talking about local bands and I believe the mag is key to that. While the New Times article did help us, we cannot rely on them be the only source of information about local music. And I'll close with this, I recall a post earlier in the thread saying what is the motivation behind putting this meeting together, well, while I have live local music at my bar, and would love to pack the place to see bands every night, wouldn't it be pretty fucking cool to say "Insert Band Name" played at my bar before the were the shit. That's what motivates me and it may sound sappy but I truly believe alot of the people I have seen locally could be that, if the opportunity presented itself. Right now opportunity in the Valley is very limited. It is time to change that.

If you did not receive my email update following the meeting please contact me at josh@ziggys-tempe.com or email me for my cell number.

I forgot to mention that the second meeting is at Ziggys, Tuesday, February 10th, 6:30pm - 7:30pm. Also, we are working to get third meeting in April hopefully at Modified or somewhere in downtown Phoenix so we can address the downtown music scene as welland not make it so Mill specific.

that's awesome Josh, I definitely think the zine is something
that will help out alot and we are in the beginning stages of getting
people together for setting that up. Any bands that want to submit
cd's for review or have shows they want people to checkout definitely
post them up on the messageboard or email me at donald(at)theshizz.org

just to throw my .02 in...

the collective kharma of the musicians themselves is important to note. something that has always pissed me off is how seemingly unwilling some people/bands are to talk about other people they share a bill with. i cant tell you how many times ive heard ppl get asked "When does your show start?" and they reply "well, there are some bands before us, but we go on at nine"

what's wrong with this picture?

talk about those other bands, talk them up, even if they are new, or even if they may suck a little. all of this state stays too splintered when it comes to music. all the other stuff that we have talked about is cool, and a great direction. but we also need to work on not being so f*cking elitist when it comes to helping out musical bretheren.

what goes around comes around - if you help others, you help yourself.

I agree giantnine to a point in that the bands need the support from other bands, stay through the other bands sets, come early and see opening bands, thanks them on stage, whatever. Hey, Shizz guys, I'm really hearing alot of interest about a local scene mag...

Right now with the holiday, everyone is out of town but we are starting to get our stuff
together. We have people who want to submit articles and do layout and such so things
are definitely getting started. I am really excited about it and hopefully we will be able
to see something here in a few months.

I completely agree bands need to help support each other, I make sure that I help promote
not only the band I am in but the other bands that are on the bill. I also make sure to watch
each band that I play with, not only to support them but also, if they are an amazing band maybe
I will want to keep in touch with them for future shows.

There is so much that is negative out there, and there always will be. We need to realize things
will never be perfect, BUT we can definitely make it better then it is right now. With People
like Leslie from the modified, Kimber from Stinkweeds and many others who have believed in
the scene for years it is awesome to see things come around and to see more people pushing more
towards a community rather then a each man for himself way of thinking.
