I watched loudQUIETloud last night. Now I want to re-complete my Pixies collection for the umpteenth time.

Thinking about it, that's a band that whose back catalog could definitely use the "Deluxe Edition" treatment. There's tons of odds and ends by them floating around.

God, yes. Some of their albums (Trompe Le Monde, I'm looking at you...) definitely suffer from "early 90's CD syndrome".

Would that be "numerous CD singles resulting in about 20 b-sides"?

Hah, well, there is that. But I was mostly referring to the fact that lots and lots of early CDs are totally shitty. Some are quiet, some are thin, etc... Of course, CDs today aren't really much better because they try to push the volume limit too high. But look at the Beatles catalog. All of the CD releases of their albums came out in the early 90s, and they are pretty inferior to the vinyl releases because people didn't really know how to really take advantage of the CD medium at the time, especially when pulling from older analog stuff.

Re-releases not only give the chance for bonus material, but also for a much more consistent and better sound.

Ah yes.

My Bloody Valentine needs a similar treatment.

First off, for many music fans, the "Loveless" album from My Bloody Valentine is one of the hallmarks of a "huge" sounding record. It is a tremendous wall of sound. The punchline is that it is one of the quietest CDs (in terms of RMS level) even in a relatively "quiet" period of CD mastering. One could easily get another 4 dB of volume out of this CD without even beginning to limit the peaks.

"it's one of the quitest CDs (in terms of RMS level) even in a relatively "quiet" period of CD mastering."

I thought raubhimself was complaining about thin shitty sounding cd's and it appears that Bob does agree, unless I am missing something.

Isaiah 16:11 (Farting is cool)
Ezekiel 4:12 (God wants you to eat poop)
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (Kill your son if he is disrespectful and a drunk)

There is a big difference between what the music industry generally does today, and what a good remaster / reissue of an old, crummy CD release is. Having 3 albums by the same artist but all of varying loudness / quality is not cool, no matter how you try to spin it. Now, looking at his example of the stooges, that's just a shitty remaster. Sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning to get rid of some audible hiss and pop stuff that was present from the analog-digital transfer. For some reason in the late 80's / early 90's, they either didn't know how to properly take care of this, or just didn't care. There's a lot more to it than just making it sound louder to match modern music.

The first time I popped Zwan's album into my car, I could hear clipping galore, and I said "Fuck this" and never listened to it in my car again. And then there are other albums I pop in, that are older CDs, that have such a flat range that it's barely enjoyable.

Plus you also get the bonus of Stereo and Mono mixes. Listen to the 40th anniversary of Pet Sounds or the reissue of the Zombies' Odessey & Oracle, and you get not only the good old fashioned mono mix, but a carefully constructed stereo mix that sounds much more modern and isn't totally destroyed by modern "techniques".

We just need more lazor beem sound effects in our music.

EDIT: All this MBV talk made a MBV remix of Primal Scream come up on shuffle. I didn't even know I had the song. Happy.
