I just got a message on OKC from a self-proclaimed witch who is also a stripper. Sweet.

2010 has been one damn wild rollercoaster. Started off getting more and more frustrated and depressed with my job. Then I lost my job in May which at first was awesome. Spent the whole summer riding my bike and doing whatever I pleased and lost 15 lbs. As soon as it started getting cold I stopped riding my bike and more or less stopped doing things period. Lot's of sitting in my room and generally being pretty depressed about life. Joined a new band a few months ago though and that's been the one thing that's been going pretty ok.

Overall though 2010 can go fuck itself.

I had a discussion with two friends recently who both agreed that NASA is a waste of money and that nothing important really comes of it. I tried to explain that NASA is less than 1% of our Federal budget and that much of modern technology is thanks to NASA efforts. Plus there is the philosophical boons that I am greatly appreciative of. But still, they thought that money could be used for a better purpose...

I think anyone seriously considering that this could be 4chan is not really thinking.

Back in college I was on a cyber security team. We went to the national competition in San Antonio (http://www.nationalccdc.org/) where the Dept. of Homeland Security was a big sponsor, and there was even a speaker from DHS there. Many people at the time wondered why DHS was involved, and this is obviously why.

It could easily be a government-backed project, but not necessarily so. The motivation points that way though.

Computer security is like the cold war, kinda. It's all about keeping one step ahead and finding new, more convoluted and complex ways to keep problems at bay. It takes all the fun and beauty out of computing and there really is no way to win.

As always it is important to know the law. As the video shows, cops aren't always on top of what the actual law is. Too many people assume they know and it gets them in trouble. That said, it is almost always 100% legal to photograph or videotape in public.

In my opinion all cops should have cameras in their car or mounted to their uniform or something like that. I can see why they wouldn't want that, because often times perfectly legal and reasonable tactics can look much worse. But I also live in this town so pretty much anything I do is videotaped and if nobody is going to consider why I might not want taped all the time, I'm not going to consider why cops might not want taped all the time. And if your job is to have deadly force available at all times, then maybe the job should be taken with utmost seriousness. I'm not even saying these videos should be made public, just available to supervisors and courtrooms when needed.

To be fair though this video makes cops look very bad when really they just pinpoint a handful of unfortunate instances. A cop's job is made easier when the relationship between cops and community is brought together, not wedged apart. When you know the citizens are expecting the worst from you, or just do not like you, you have to expect them to act and react according to that attitude.

So Sonic Youth is hypocritical because they played in China 3 years ago? Dang. They are completely separate issues. I would hope that any band that has a chance to reach out to the people of China would take that opportunity. There is a huge difference between the issues of China and the US. Allowing some Chinese youth to see a show by a non-mainstream American band is kind of huge. Depriving some whiny Americans from seeing some bands is not really on the same level IMO.
